Pottery That Lasts: Glazes, Frost and Sun
Check outdoor suitability, drainage and care instructions before choosing pottery for inland sun and seasonal temperature changes.
By WaterWise Yard Decor & Design

For an inland garden, ask whether the specific pot is rated for outdoor use and occasional cold weather. Glaze alone does not establish frost resistance. Materials, firing, water absorption and the manufacturer’s care instructions all matter.
Check drainage and the weight of the filled pot. A vessel intended for decoration may need a separate nursery pot or liner, while a planter needs a clear drainage route. Confirm the setup before drilling or altering a piece.
Pot feet may help keep drainage holes clear when the design and weight allow them. Use a stable, level base, protect delicate paving and follow the care instructions for the finish. Bring your planting plan and dimensions to WaterWise to compare appropriate pottery.
